Would Teachers Make Good Medical
Sales Representatives?

Would teachers make good medical sales representatives? Well, the answer is that it just depends because we really cannot generalize whether all individuals with teaching backgrounds would be good fits for medical sales positions. We would have to look at each individual to determine whether that person would do well as a medical sales rep.

We can assume that due to the presentation activities involved in teaching, most teachers will have acceptable communications skills which certainly help in any sales job. However, in addition to communications skills, one must have the aptitude for sales. Not all people with good communications skills, teachers included, can in fact sell.

Some teachers might be good at talking but not so good at listening. Sales professionals must be good at both talking and listening. Teachers are also use to telling students what to do. This authoritative personal style may not work well in a sales environment with actual customers as well as sales management.

Also, medical sales representatives have to travel to different locations and deal with customers who may not always be receptive. These factors may not be attractive features of the sales job for many teachers.

But if a former teacher is willing to be a good student in getting trained in selling techniques and does show the right aptitude for a medical sales job, then there’s no reason why this particular individual cannot perform well in such a new role.

Sales managers will not generalize teachers as far as whether these people are appropriate or not for a medical sales position. Each applicant is looked at individually and if a former teacher happens to have what it takes to sell, then that person would likely become a good medical sales representative. This is basically what we can generalize for those who have backgrounds involving use of some sort of presentation skills such as teaching.
