Big Tip For Your Drug Rep Pharmaceutical Sales Resume

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

#jobs #sales #pharmaceutical #medical

As some of you know, one of the bonuses that I offer for my readers of my drug rep jobs program “How To Get A Dream Job In Pharmaceutical Sales – Direct Inside Advice and Guidance From a Sales Manager” is a custom evaluation of your resume.  I’ve been doing a lot of these and one of the most common mistakes I see on resumes is bloated job descriptions.

Too often, people would write every last task that they did during their past and present job positions.  For example, nurses would write in everything from checking patients with all sorts of clinical equipment also described in the resume, discussing patient status with pharmacists and doctors, communicating with different hospital departments to giving patients their medications and more.

The truth of the matter is that as a pharmaceutical sales manager, I don’t have to know every last detail of the things that a nurse does on a day to day basis.  Think about this — the description of all of these tasks do not imply that such a candidate would make a good drug rep.  Just because a nurse did all these clinical tasks, it doesn’t mean that he or she can sell.

Instead, I would rather see descriptions of actual unique success stories that highlight communications and/or selling skills.  These would truly separate this nurse from all other nurses out there.  These successes would position the candidate as a good potential pharmaceutical sales rep.

The same can be said for all other candidates from other fields as well.  Don’t bloat your job descriptions up because it is very unlikely that these descriptions would mean that you would be a good drug rep.  It just tells us what your previous jobs were all about and doesn’t connect it to the job you are applying for.

So focus more on actual success stories.  Leave the job description text brief and beef up the success stories for your drug rep pharmaceutical sales resume.  For much more information on this field including a free webinar on pharmaceutical sales positions, click on the link.

Start Your Summer Networking For Medical Sales Careers

Monday, June 28th, 2010

#medical #jobs #sales  – Although some medical sales representatives do go on vacation during summers mainly because it’s a slightly slower season due to customers like physicians going away during this period as well, it is a good time to network with any who might be around for your own future medical sales careers.

I recall that quite often, there was definitely less hectic work day schedules with doctor appointments spread out a bit more so there was more time in between official appointments.  This mean less rushing from appointment to appointment.  Medical sales reps would try to fill in these time gaps by calling on pharmacies and other clinics on a drop in basis.

Since there could be more time available in between appointments with doctors, it might be easier to network with medical sales representatives out there.  They will have more time to sit down with you if you buy them coffee or even lunch.

Just don’t do this if you see them working with their district sales managers since the reps are expected to make customer calls all day.  You may approach such teams just to say hello and perhaps get their business cards but don’t request anything in front of the sales managers since such requests are really for taking time away from sales calls for the reps which the managers might not like.

Contact the representatives later when they are alone.  Then they will likely be more receptive especially when the slower summer season comes around.  So just have some tact about this when you do your networking with medical sales people as you don’t want to get the reps in trouble.  Believe me, getting them in trouble would not be good for your own future medical sales careers.

For much more information on networking in this field, see my medical sales careers webinar.

Pharmaceutical Sales Resume Evaluation From The Road

Monday, June 21st, 2010

#pharmaceutical #resumes #jobs  –  A pharmaceutical sales resume evaluation by me, a former national sales manager in the industry, is offered as one of the three free bonuses that come with either the book or audio program called ‘How To Get A Dream Job In Pharmaceutical Sales – Direct Inside Advice and Guidance From a Sales Manager’.  This custom review of your document alone is worth much more than the price of the book.

This week, I’m off to southern California on a mini speaking tour but will have no problems doing any resume evaluations from the road since I will have my laptop with me.  I’ve done such evaluations before during my travel.

Getting someone who has been an actual sales manager who did the hiring of drug reps to review your resume will be one of the most beneficial things you can get since you get feedback from somebody who will be very much like the others who screen candidates.

I can say that for about 98% of all the pharmaceutical sales resumes I’ve ever evaluated so far, quite a lot of major revision work would have been required.  Of course these feedback will only make a resume that much more strong in the eyes of both sales managers and HR people from pharmaceutical companies.

I just evaluated some more sent in this past weekend and will fire them off back to the senders this morning before I head off to the airport for my California trip.  If you would like a custom evaluation of your resume, keep in mind that this offer is made only to those readers of my program who ordered directly from my pharma sales website.  It is not a separate service available to anyone.  Interested candidates should go to this website to take a free webinar on this field first.

Nurse Comments On Pharmaceutical Sales Rep Jobs Program

Sunday, June 20th, 2010

#nurse #nursing #nurses #pharmaceutical #medical

Here is an interesting testimonial from somebody who happens to be already working in the medical field who is considering a move to a pharmaceutical sales rep job.  Jenny C. is a hospital nurse and has observed pharmaceutical sales reps coming in and out of the hospital for years.

Now that she is at a point where she is thinking about a career change, she bought the audio and print versions of “How To Get A Dream Job In Pharmaceutical Sales – Direct Inside Advice and Guidance From A Sales Manager”  Here’s what she had to say about this book and audio program.

“Reading Clint Cora’s book has been an eye opening experience for me even though I am a healthcare professional working in the medical field. The book offers road to success for those who are willing to give 100% in pursuing this career path whether one already has medical sales experience, no sales but medical experience or for those even without any sales or medical experience.”

She goes on to continue with further comments.

“Even if one doesn’t have the actual skill but has the potential, he provides the map for the reader to be able to construct such skill if he or she has that capability.  The strong innate desire he has for others to succeed is rooted throughout his book and beautifully summarized on the last page. Personally I know I am a better person from having benefitted from his extraordinarily written book and would recommend it to anyone who is not sure of their future career path but definitely wants to succeed by staying within the medical industry.”

Many more comments from others can be found at Pharma Sales program testimonials.

She is not the first medical professional or nurse for that matter who has considered pharmaceutical sales rep jobs as a new possible career option.  There have been many nurses who made this career shift to pharmaceuticals and it’s a natural move in my opinion.  I even managed a pharmaceutical sales rep who was a former nurse during my years as a national sales manager in the industry.  But it’s certainly a great idea to get more education on the actual industry business side of the job before applying to positions and a good first step would be to take my free webinar on pharmaceutical sales rep jobs.

The Best Pharmaceutical Recruiter For You

Friday, June 18th, 2010

#pharmaceuticalsales #pharmaceutical #jobs

For those of you who are hoping to get into the pharmaceutical sales field, I happen to know the type of person who will be the best pharmaceutical recruiter.   This type of person has the attention of sales managers, ie., the people who do the actual hiring of drug representatives, better than all other types of recruiting professionals.

This type of person is also the most knowledgeable about the actual job of being a drug rep day in and day out.  This person will also know about openings in the company long before most other recruiters will since they have the inside scoop on things happening out in sales territories of companies.

And finally, this type of person doesn’t depend on placing candidates successfully in order to get paid because he or she is already making good money doing something else.  This is somebody that you will definitely want to get to know and make contacts with if you are serious about getting a position as a drug representative.

Do you know who this best pharmaceutical recruiter is?

No, it isn’t somebody who works for a recruiting agency or headhunter even if it’s one that specializes in healthcare industries.  It’s not the one who advertises in job placement sites and ads.

Instead, the best pharmaceutical recruiter happens to be the existing drug reps who are already working with companies.  The reps have the ears of their sales managers and they know their company’s products the best.  They are doing the job of a drug rep day in and day out.

If you can make contact with such drug reps and if they like you, you would be in the best possible position to get a job with their sales force.  Sales managers listen to their reps a lot more than any recruiter with an agency.  In fact, managers actually prefer to hire through the recommendations of internal people such as their own drug reps because this way, they don’t have to pay commissions to a recruiting agency for placements.

You can bypass the recruiters, the HR departments and get a straight line right to the hiring sales managers if you can get drug reps to refer you to their managers.  I know this because I’ve hired this way before as so have my other sales management colleagues.  Not only do we often get the best possible candidates this way, but the company also saves time and money by not having to advertise publicly to do an official hiring campaign.

So if you want to get the best pharmaceutical recruiter helping you get your first job in pharmaceutical sales, make sure that you get on the good sides of the local drug representatives in your area. To help you do just that, start with my free webinar and then check out my careers programs for this field.

Video On Pharmaceutical Sales Representative Jobs During Recession

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

#jobs #sales #pharmaceutical #pharmaceuticalsales #recession

Although there are some signs that we are beginning to recover from the tough economy recession, many people are still finding it hard to find jobs, including pharmaceutical sales representative jobs during this period.  Companies went through layoffs and may not be in a position to hire just yet.

However, it is during these tougher times that you should definitely begin your industry networking activities despite the fact that they may not be in a position to hire just yet.  Recessions are like business cycles.  They come and go and things go up and down.  We are still in a down period but this doesn’t mean that you should be idle in terms of activity towards landing your dream job in pharmaceutical sales.

Ideally, people such as sales managers and existing drug reps who are in a position to refer you to their managers, hire those candidates whom they feel comfortable with.  The best way to do this is start building a relationship with them now through information interviews and casual meetups.

When things turn around in the economy and companies are in a position to hire for their sales forces again, you will be at the top of the list since you are already a known entity.  If you did not do any networking activity and elected to make yourself known through normal job applications at the time the companie start posting job positions, then you will be lost among all the hundreds of other people who are also candidates for pharmaceutical sales representative jobs.  Instead of being up at the top, you will be lost within the huge pile of other resumes.

So there is a lot of ground work that you can do during tough economy recessions.  You can certainly start the process of turning yourself into a top notch candidate for drug rep positions if you make yourself known now rather than later.  Most people will wait and they will end up having to compete with everyone else.

See the video below where I talk about this quite directly.

It is also important to educate yourself as much as possible about the industry during a recession.  Networking is a must and to get you started, take my free 30 minute webinar on pharmaceutical sales representative jobs.

Entertaining Inspirational Quotes For Nurses

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

#nurses #nursing #inspirationalquote  -  I was alerted to a post from a nursing blog on a collection of interesting, entertaining inspirational quotes for nurses.  This was the first time that I has seen such a collection for a specific healthcare professional group such as nursing.

The only thing that is missing from this rather big collection is an inspirational quote of some kind about nurses and pharmaceutical sales representatives. I think there was already some mention about doctors and patients but no drug reps.  Many nurses at clinics do interact with pharmaceutical sales people who call on the hospitals and clinics.

The other relationship between these two fields is that some nurses will end up switching careers to become drug representatives for pharmaceutical companies.  They have the right clinical background already and hospital nurses in particular will probably already know the ins and outs of the hospital system.

Knowing such hospital systems will certainly help in knowing who is who in a hospital as well as the general process of getting a company’s products listed on the hospital’s formulary status.

The only thing that interested nurses will have to prove to potential hiring companies is that they have superior communications skills and selling potential.  After all, pharmaceutical sales jobs are still sales careers rather than healthcare clinical positions.  Many business type of skills will have to be learned and nurses will have to prove that they can be trained on such new skills.

The transition from nursing to pharmaceuticals although related fields, is still an industry change and therefore all nurses who are interested in becoming drug reps should take my free 30 minute Pharmaceutical Sales Jobs Webinar which is perfect for nurses.  It will give them a good insight into what is required for this interesting career choice that offers many perks that is not available in clinical positions.

In the meantime, do enjoy the inspirational quotes for nurses that was brough to my attention.

Pharmaceutical Recruiting Services Useless For Newcomers

Monday, June 14th, 2010

#pharmaceutical #jobs #sales

Too often, pharmaceutical recruiting services attract a lot of people who are interested in landing pharmaceutical sales jobs.  They are sometimes very effective for those candidates who have direct or related experience.

However, for newcomers out there, they will quickly find that such pharmaceutical recruiters will be useless in helping them.  This should be no surprise since recruiters make their money on the commissions from placing successful candidates in companies and the chances of doing that are much better with experienced people.

So what should newcomers do given that pharmaceutical recruiting agencies will turn out to be of little help?  There is hope since that is exactly why I came out with my book and audio program called “How To Get A Dream Job In Pharmaceutical Sales – Direct Inside Advice and Guidance From A Sales Manager“.

My program has been extremely helpful to many people who want to get into the pharmaceutical industry for the first time.  In fact, here’s one such individual who recently read my book.

Valerie Duggan of North Carolina writes;

“Clint’s eBook was a valuable asset in helping me break into a pharmaceutical sales career. I really appreciated the fact that the content was easy to understand and the basics were well explained. A better understanding of how things work in pharmaceutical sales definitely gave me an edge over my competition.”

“Ultimately, the deciding factor for me to purchase the book was the resume evaluation bonus. And, turns out, Clint did a great job at helping me tweak my resume. My problem was to decide what should be left out. Clint gave me the focus I needed to shorten and strengthen my resume.”

“This book contains a step-by-step process on exactly how to land a pharmaceutical rep job. Not only it provided me with the tools but the answers to the “whys” as well, so I understood clearly how the system works. I also appreciated all the references and tips in the appendices.”

The resume evaluation Valerie referred to was one of the three free bonuses that I offer when either the book or five hour audio program is ordered through my website.  At this same website, is a free 30 minute webinar on pharmaceutical sales careers in this exciting field and I invite you to check it out.  So don’t worry if the pharmaceutical recruiting services turn out to be less than helpful since this is expected.  But there is hope so check out the webinar.

Pharmaceutical Sales Job Still Gets Smirks From Crowds

Friday, June 11th, 2010

#pharmaceutical #drugs #jobs

It’s very interesting but I’m finding that even though I no longer work in the pharmaceutical industry but maintain my connection as the author of ‘How To Get A Pharmaceutical Sales Job – Direct Inside Advice and Guidance From a Sales Manager‘, I still include this fact in the introductions note that people use when they introduce me as a speaker at various speaking events that I do these days.

This book is only one of two books that are mentioned in my introduction (the other being ‘The Life Champion In You‘ which is my motivational personal growth book).  Whenever a predominantly non-pharmaceutical audience is present, which is most of the time at my live talks, a few people will always been seen smirking when the introducer mentioned the title of my pharmaceutical sales book.

I suppose there is still some sort of interesting impression made whenever the topic of drugs and sales is mentioned.  I’m pretty sure that most of these people are thinking about the illegal type of drug sales here!  Of course if one thinks about it, who would want a dream job selling drugs?

Of course those of you who are reading this blog post know for sure that it’s the legal drugs that I’m referring to when I talk or write about pharmaceutical sales.  Even though many people do realize that it’s not the illicit type of drugs I’m dealing with, some still make the whole area a bit controversial since the media have always portrayed drug companies as huge profit machines that care just about the bottom line.

In a way, I don’t mind this type of stigma for this industry since it creates discussion wherever you go or whatever social event you are in and the topic of drugs come up.  I still believe that pharmaceutical sales is still a great career choice and I’m glad that I spent many successful years in it.
