Considering Making Pharmaceutical Sales Careers Audio Multi CD

Friday, January 29th, 2010

Currently, my audio version of “How To Get A Dream Job In Pharmaceutical Sales – Direct Inside Advice and Guidance From A Sales Manager” is on a single CD with multiple MP3 files.  This CD works with all computers and most DVD players that support the MP3 format.  However, MP3 CDs typically do not work in most car audio players or stand alone CD players unless they are build to take MP3s as well as standard audio files.

I’m considering on making this pharmaceutical sales careers audio program into a multi CD set.  However, since the program is about 5.5 hours long, such a set would require up to six separate CDs in order to accommodate the entire audio content.  In order to be able to be played in car audio players, standard audio files rather than MP3s will have to be used and they take much more space on CDs than compressed MP3s.  A multi CD set will be more labor intensive to produce and this will be reflected in a slightly higher price for the program.

I’ll make a decision on whether to stay with the single MP3 CD or move into a multi CD set soon.  In the meantime, if you have any thoughts on this, please feel free to leave some comments.

Online Pet Pharmacy Effect On Pharmaceutical Sales

Sunday, January 24th, 2010

I just wrote an article on using an online pet pharmacy to save money on pet medications for my dogs.  Then I remembered when the entire internet pharmacy revolution first started when I was still in the pharmaceutical industry.  At that time, the first internet pharmacies were based in Canada.  Many Americans were ordering from these Canadian based internet pharmacies in order to save money on their prescriptions.

This was an interesting situation because the Canadian divisions of multinational pharmaceutical companies benefited from the extra sales.  However, the US divisions of the same companies were not so happy since technically, they lost sales to the Canadian offices.

Even within Canada, there was an effect.  Many Canadian patients started to order their prescriptions from these internet pharmacies which were located mainly in the province of Manitoba.  Therefore, sales budgets went out of whack because the pharmaceutical representatives in Manitoba ended up with all these sales at the expense of lost sales from the other provinces.  A lot of juggling and number crunching has to be done in order to present fairness to all of the sales forces within Canada as well as the US.

Now that there are now online pet pharmacies, I wonder if they are having a similar effect that the internet pharmacies for humans had.  I would think with North Americans being avid pet owners, that the would be interesting effects as a result of the emergence of the online pet pharmacy on pharmaceutical sales budgets for animal health divisions of companies.

If you are a pet owner, you should take a look at my article (with accompanying video) on my own experience with an Online Pet Pharmacy to save pet medication costs.

Need Pharmaceutical Sales Experience Before Marketing Positions

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

I presented a talk on diversity skills to an executive networking group this morning and one attendee from the meeting asked me about the pharmaceutical industry afterwards.  He was already in mid career in marketing in another industry and wanted to know if he has any chances of getting into pharmaceutical marketing.  I told him that for this industry, one usually needs pharmaceutical sales experience before getting into a marketing position.  So he would have to be willing to get into pharmaceutical sales for a few years before being considered for a marketing position. The pharmaceutical industry is one of the fields where they do prefer this particular career path to marketing.  He didn’t know much about this field so I suggested that he take my free 30 minute webinar on pharmaceutical sales careers to see if the field interests him.

Hats Off To All Winter Region Drug Representatives

Saturday, January 9th, 2010

My hats off to all winter region drug representatives.  Unlike those working inside cozy warm offices all day, drug representatives must travel through the cold winter to make their sales calls to doctors and pharmacists at clinics each working day, no matter how cold the weather gets or how much snow is on the roads.

I did this job for many years before I became a product marketing manager and sales manager where I spent much less time out there in the winter.  I remember having to go in and out of clinics back to the cold, often walking around in slushy parking lots all day.  It was certainly not easy working as a drug representative during the cold winters especially having to wear professional business attire as well.

So my deep respect to all drug representatives out there braving the cold all winter.  Good selling to you!

Past Pharmaceutical Industry Colleagues Can Be Future Connections

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

Funny thing happened at my local Walmart yesterday.  I was there picking up a few things and used their washroom.  There was one other guy in the washroom at the time.  Of course, didn’t think much of it.

Then when I got home, I got a message via email from one of my past colleagues from my first ever pharmaceutical company back in the early 90s.  We had just connected on LinkedIn a few weeks before.  He asked me if that was me at Walmart.  It turns out that he was the other guy in the washroom.

He thought he recognized me but by the time he was quite certain, I already exited the store.  I didn’t recognize him at all but then again, I didn’t really look at his face.  This man was one of the friendliest managers I’ve worked with in the pharmaceutical industry though.

Past pharmaceutical industry colleagues can turn out to be future connections.  My former colleague here is now with a specialty pharmaceutical company where a second former colleague of mine from another pharmaceutical company I worked at is also part of the sales team where my first colleague is at. Hopefully, they have good stories to share about me there!

Pharmaceutical Representatives Getting Back On Territory

Monday, January 4th, 2010

Most pharmaceutical representatives will be getting back on territory after the December holidays.  This represents a good time to restart your networking with them.  Having said that, there could be new sales meetings for them to attend which may mean that they will be away for a few days to a week either in January or February.  But otherwise, they are back in full force.  So get out there and network if you want to build connections to the pharmaceutical industry.
