Wednesday, February 28th, 2007Is Merck a Good Pharmaceutical Company To Work For?
Tuesday, February 27th, 2007One of the questions that was recently asked of me by an aspiring pharmaceutical sales rep was whether or not I thought Merck was a good pharmaceutical company to work for. In my opinion, all big pharmaceutical companies, particularly if they have been around for many years, are decent employers.
Having said that, any pharmaceutical company can hit rough times especially if they get into a situation where a drug is suddenly pulled off the market like in the case of Merck’s Vioxx. Changes in senior management can also affect the corporate culture of a pharmaceutical company and in my opinion after many years in the industry, no company is immune to it.
Overall, if a company has survived in the marketplace for many years, it must have done something right but it does have the potential to go through ups and downs as well.
When interviewing for pharmaceutical sales positions, use your own best judgement of the management you are exposed to in the event you get an offer. If you feel that they are people you can work with, then go for the job. If not, wait for another opportunity because your direct manager can indeed make or break your job for you.

Should References Be Listed In Pharmaceutical Sales Resumes?
Monday, February 19th, 2007As a former national sales manager in the pharmaceutical industry, I’ve seen my share of pharmaceutical sales resumes from interested applicants for jobs over the years. Of course, I’ve also used resumes of different types for my own career.
Sometimes, I see pharmaceutical sales resumes where job seekers have already included specific names of individuals as their references, usually near the end of the documents. On many other resumes, a brief statement such as ‘References to be supplied upon request’ is used rather than listing actual references names. Which way is better?

Drug Rep Story At Toastmasters Meeting Went Well
Friday, February 16th, 2007My drug rep story at a local Toastmasters meeting went quite well as I dug up one of my earliest experiences when I first started out as a drug rep. I even used a drug rep detail bag as a prop. I gave the audience the basic structure of how prescription drugs are promoted and sold in the market which they appreciated. I outlined the steps from detailing the doctors all the way to the patients getting their prescriptions filled at the pharmacies.
Then I talked about one particular doctor I called on who had previous bad experiences with one of the drugs I promoted and what I had to do over the next year in order to convince that doctor to prescribe again.
This story was from my first year in the pharmaceutical industry. My involvement in pharmaceutical sales lasted over 14 years with stints as a drug rep, sales trainer, product manager and a national sales manager when I was in charge of hiring and managing drug reps.
I have since written a book for others on how to get jobs as drug reps since my industry experience would definitely qualify me on teaching the right steps to enter the field.
Good Communications Skills can lead to Drug Representative Jobs
Thursday, February 15th, 2007Are you stuck in a job behind a desk that involves writing countless reports or time in front of a computer screen all day? Are you tired of being in an office environment seeing the same company faces all the time? Do you envy those who have jobs that take them outside the office meeting with different people each day?
If you have good communications skills both verbally as well as written (and would like to utilize your verbal skills more often), then a new job as a drug representative for a pharmaceutical company may just be right for you. Drug representatives promote the use of medical products of pharmaceutical companies to customers such as doctors and pharmacists.

Pharmaceutical Sales Careers for Business Degree Graduates
Tuesday, February 13th, 2007So you graduated with a business degree or even a MBA and you don’t want to become an accountant or get too heavily involved in the finance or banking areas. You like marketing and sales but are not sure of which industry to work in. If you want to be in a leading edge field that plays an important role in healthcare, you might want to consider a pharmaceutical sales career.
Unlike what some people think, one does not have to be a science graduate or have a scientific background to become a pharmaceutical sales representative. As long as one has the aptitude to keep learning, pharmaceutical company training departments will make sure that new pharmaceutical sales reps are thoroughly trained in the science in order to do the job effectively.

Will Do Drug Rep Story as Toastmasters Speech
Monday, February 12th, 2007I will be doing a speech at a Toastmasters club tonight on one of my early stories as a new drug rep many years ago. It will feature one of the first drugs I sold and how I turned around an important doctor who was originally very resistant in using this drug due to side effects. I will also illustrate the basic workings of pharmaceutical sales for the audience who will likely not be knowledgeable about the industry. It will give them some idea of what a drug rep does.
The job of a drug rep today is more or less the same as it was many years ago when I was in the industry but one main difference today is that it is much harder to get into the field. For those who are interested in becoming drug reps, see Drug Rep Careers.
Toastmaster Speech To Recall Old Drug Rep Days
Tuesday, February 6th, 2007The Toastmaster speech I’m preparing will recall one of my first success stories during my old drug rep days in Winnipeg when I first started out. It will be about the struggle to finally get a very important doctor to become a huge prescriber of a drug I use to sell called Cytotec, which prevented stomach ulcers in elderly patients. Of course, I will also give the audience a brief backgrounder on how pharmaceutical sales usually works in the market.
To Do Toastmasters Speech On Pharmaceutical Sales
Friday, February 2nd, 2007I will start work on a speech to be performed at my Toastmasters club meeting next week and this speech will recap some stories from my early years just starting out as a pharmaceutical sales representative. Most of the general public is not familiar with how things work in pharmaceutical sales so I will also give the Toastmasters audience a quick explanation of how the selling process works in pharmaceutical sales.
Who knows? Maybe this will entice an individual in the audience who is due for a career change to pursue a pharmaceutical sales career.
