Working as a Drug Rep During Winter Months

Tuesday, January 30th, 2007

Up in Canada where the temperatures are currently in deep freezes, it’s the time of year when it could be a bit tough working as a drug rep in the pharmaceutical industry. Making calls to doctors and pharmacies is still the big part of the job no matter what the weather is outside. Fortunately, company cars are fairly comfortable and the time walking outside from the cars to the medical buildings are short.

The one tough thing that I found when I was working as a drug rep during the winter all those years was keeping winter coats and suit pant legs from getting too dirty. Winter conditions, particularly in the cities, can make cars very dirty and I found that when reps get in and out of their cars, as well as work from their trunks to get more selling materials, they often brush up against parts of their vehicles that are dirty. Therefore the challenge of keeping one’s attire clean during the winter months.

Early in my career in Winnipeg, Canada, where the temperatures can drop to minus 30s Celcius (that’s 30 degrees below freezing), one particular drug rep didn’t care much for looks and decided to wear his snowmobile suit over his business wear. Interestly enough, nobody else was surprised. I guess when the temperatures go that far down, anything to keep warm is reasonable.

Pharmaceutical Recruiters Are Not Effective

Monday, January 29th, 2007

It’s amazing how there are so many people who think that recruiters are the way to go for people who want to get pharmaceutical sales jobs for the first time. For individuals who are new to the pharma industry, recruiters will not often be able to land pharma sales jobs for them. For job seekers who are outside the pharmaceutical industry, it is still best to apply directly to the different pharmaceutical companies. Getting interviews with recruiters or headhunters is quite easy but getting them to get actual job interviews and offers from companies is something else. The recruiter route is best for those with lots of industry experience who are after more senior positions. Having said that, recruiters can have a place by providing interview experience for those who are seeking their first pharmaceutical sales jobs.

Pharmaceutical Sales a Great Career for Science Graduates

Thursday, January 25th, 2007

So you graduated with a bachelor of science degree and you don’t want to become a doctor, dentist or work in a lab. You also don’t intend to pursue a graduate degree in science either as scientific research is not really your calling. So you might be thinking about what type of careers and jobs are open for university or college graduates with science degrees.

I was in that same situation many years ago as I felt that I would prefer wearing a business suit rather than a lab coat for my working career. I wasn’t interested in Petri dishes, Bunsen burners, flasks or dissection tools anymore. I wanted to carry a snazzy briefcase and have business luncheons instead. So I was fortunate enough to stumble into a career field that I would stay in for fourteen very lucrative and rewarding years. This career was in pharmaceutical sales which turned out to be a perfect match of science and business.

There are many perks and benefits when working as a drug rep in the pharmaceutical industry. Salaries and bonuses could amount to six figures for high achievers and there is the use of a company car. Corporate expense accounts are also available for business entertaining. There are also the travel opportunities that are paid for by the company as many sales meetings as well as medical conventions are often located at nice places. Being a pharmaceutical sales representative also means that there is a lot of freedom and independence with the job as fixed working shifts are no longer the way for a drug rep. Even better is that for 95% of the time, there is no boss to look over your shoulder while on the job.

Being a drug rep also has some intangible rewards I didn’t expect when I first started. The field involves working with medical professionals to bring them useful products that will greatly benefit their patients. Drug reps with pharmaceutical sales forces can be considered as part of the overall health care team since they are playing an important role in helping patients.

So if you are a science graduate and want to do something in business rather than in a purely scientific field, consider pharmaceutical sales as a viable career option.

Nurses and Pharmaceutical Sales Careers

Monday, January 22nd, 2007

Throughout my fourteen year pharmaceutical career, I’ve met quite a few nurses who wanted to leave nursing for other careers. They were tired of the long shift hours and having to work overnight shifts as well. Some were also tired of having to physically move patients around. One even injured her back doing just that and had to take a medical leave for rehabilitation. There are also the politics involved in the hospitals that many nurses have grown tired of.

Some of these nurses asked me about the possibility of becoming drug reps in pharmaceutical sales after being exposed to the industry while at the hospitals. Well it turns out that a career move from nursing to pharmaceutical sales is quite a natural one. I’ve known many drug reps, some even under my own direct management, who were in fact, former nurses.

Nurses who want to become pharmaceutical sales representatives have quite a lot of advantages compared to candidates who have never worked in the health care fields before. Nurses are already knowledgeable in physiology, anatomy and how typical medical environments such as hospitals work.

There are many perks and benefits when working as a drug rep in the pharmaceutical industry. Salaries and bonuses could amount to six figures for high achievers and there’s the use of a company car.

Although nursing does have its rewards since the job involves helping patients, being a drug rep can also have similar satisfaction. The field involves working with medical professionals to bring them useful products that will greatly benefit their patients. So even though there’s a career change, nurses who end up being drug reps with pharmaceutical sales forces can still be considered as part of the overall health care team since they are playing an important role in helping patients.

For information on how nurses can make such career changes, see pharmaceutical sales careers.

Pharmaceutical Sales Resumes Evaluated with Either Package

Monday, January 22nd, 2007

Both the text and audio packages for “How To Get A Dream Job In Pharmaceutical Sales – Direct Inside Advice and Guidance from a Sales Manager” have the custom evaluation of pharmaceutical sales resumes as bonuses done by the author Clint Cora. Purchasers of either package just have to e-mail their resumes to Clint at the www.GetPharmaceuticalSalesJob.com website (see contact info page).

However, it is highly recommended that the chapters on resumes be read and/or listened to before sending in a resume for evaluation since this bonus is a one time service only. The best possible resume drafted with guidelines from the book should be the version sent in for maximum benefit. Once a pretty high quality resume has been given a critique by Clint Cora, it should be on its final leg of turning into a very effective document used in a job hunt for suitable pharmaceutical sales positions.

New Audio Education for Aspiring Pharmaceutical Sales Reps Ready

Friday, January 19th, 2007

The new and anticipated audio version of Clint Cora’s book “How To Get A Dream Job In Pharmaceutical Sales – Direct Inside Advice and Guidance from a Sales Manager” is finally available. It is over five and a half hours of education and covers all 23 chapters as well as 5 appendices from the book. It is such a massive product that the audio is split into eight separate MP3 tracks with file sizes ranging from 8 to 11 megs. These files are available for downloading. Once the files are downloaded, users can transfer the files to a portable sound device like an iPod or burn them onto a CD so learning can be done while driving or commuting.

Since many individuals prefer to learn by listening rather than just be reading, this audio will greatly enhance the absorption of the important concepts required for an effective job hunt for a pharmaceutical sales position.

The audio package includes the audio and the text ebook as well as the same bonuses that come along with the regular text package. These bonuses include the custom resume evaluation by Clint Cora. For more information on this new audio package, see www.GetPharmaceuticalSalesJob.com
